We have all heard that “Sticks and stones will break my bones but words will never hurt me.”  This is not true. The words we say impact what chemicals get released in the brain. The ones that hurt or help us the most are the ones we say about and to ourselves.  Most of these conversations happen without us even realizing it.

When I started to watch my words one thing I noticed was to “watch my gut”  By watching my gut I learned to monitor my words, to recognize WHEN I was telling myself things that would hurt me.  You too can use this as a thermometer of sorts.  When suddenly your mood changes and you feel out of sorts STOP and pay attention to what is going on in your mind.  What are you thinking about at that very moment and if the words are not positive and building then change them.

There is also intentionally placing words and thoughts in your mind. Napoleon Hill called this method auto suggestion. He said “Auto-suggestion is a term which applies to all suggestion and to all self-administered stimuli which reaches ones mind through the five senses. Stated another way auto-suggestion is self-suggestion. It is the agency of communication between that part of the mind where conscious thought takes place and that which serves as the seat of action for the subconscious mind.”

One of the auto-suggestion tools I use is declarations.  They have changed my life.  They have been able to reach into my subconscious and helped to create change in ways I never could’ve imagined. These suggestions have created in me the courage to do things I didn’t think I could do, they’ve helped me take action where before there was only apathy.

5 Steps – Daily Declarations

  1. Once you have defined your definiteness of purpose you are ready to use your thoughts and words to accomplish it. Start by creating statements that describe the attributes and characteristics you will need to achieve your purpose.
  2. Write out strong action statements that describe what you want and what you will do to achieve your purpose. (No worries I will include examples below to give you an idea)                                                              If these statements, as you read them out loud, make you feel weird and uncomfortable you are on the right track.
  3. Now stand in front of the statement tall and strong. This means feet hip width apart, shoulders back, head up, eyes straight ahead and say the words out loud with a strong voice.
  4. Add positive body language to the statements. Movements of up and out and down towards you as if receiving.  Make sure the body language matches the words – don’t push them away.
  5. Do this first thing every morning and in the evening right before bed for a few minutes.  Turn on music to really make them powerful.

This will change your life

When I first started doing this I felt so silly.  I had one that said

“I’m an incredible manager. I welcome new things into my life and look forward to the experience. I’m a steward of whatever comes my way!”

I’m not kidding when I say that within a week after I started saying this to myself I was having a really hard day where I felt overwhelmed and wondered HOW I was going to get everything done.  Once again the gut check is what let me know that something was going on.

Immediately the phrase above came into my mind and the stress emotion completely disappeared.  I suddenly felt powerful and I knew that I could manage it and would be able to handle it without any pressure put on my myself.
